The Glucose Revolution

The Glucose Revolution

Last year, I read a book called The Glucose Revolution and found it so brilliant that I thought I would write a review on it. It is written by Jessie Inchauspé, a French biochemist with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from King’s College London, and a Master of Science in biochemistry from Georgetown University. It discusses what glucose is, why glucose spikes are so harmful, and what you can do to fatten the glucose curves. When I was training as a Nutritional Therapist, our lecturers were all over blood sugar/glucose balance. We were taught that it was the most important area to check in all our clients as it had so many detrimental effects on every system in the body.

When I read this book, it explained why this was such a hot topic for all my lecturers. I was thrilled to read about the cutting edge research that Jessie had done and how brilliantly and clearly she explains how to correct this issue. With this in mind, I thought that I would share some of the highlights that can help you in your journey to optimal health. Below are some great health hacks after reading The Glucose Revolution. If you want to try some, perhaps aim to introduce one or two hacks a week as trying all of them at once may be overwhelming!

Hack 1: Eat foods in the right order

  1. Fibre which includes salad and vegetables
  2. Protein and fat which foods are chicken, fish, lean red meat, eggs, dairy nuts, beans and legumes (protein) and butter, oils and avocado (fats).
  3. Finally starches and sugar which includes any sweet food, potatoes, grains and fruit
  4.

Hack 2: Add a green starter to all your meals

As a green salad starter to your meal. This includes lettuce, bell peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, and spring onions with an olive oil and lemon dressing.

Hack 3: Stop counting calories

A donut has the same number of calories as Greek yoghurt, yet a donut will cause weight gain and Greek yoghurt will not. Calorie counting is a very outdated way of weight management control.

Hack 4: Flatten your breakfast curve

Breakfast is the worst time to eat a high sugary meal such as having a cornflakes with milk or a smoothie made with lots of fruit. It is better to train yourself to have a savoury breakfast or to add plenty of natural full-fat yoghurt to your berries and low sugar granola.

Hack 5: Always eat sugar or sweet foods at the end of your meal

Fibre, protein and fat’s buffer the impact of glucose’s entering the blood stream. If you really can’t resist that sweet food

  1. Put it to one side for after your meal
  2. Put it aside for 20 minutes, have a big glass of water with 1 tablespoon of cidre vinegar. Then eat it with good handful of nuts.

Hack 6: Reach for the vinegar before you eat

Drink a tablespoon of vinegar in a tall glass of water a few minutes before you eat something sweet as this flattens the glucose and insulin spikes (lemon juices does not have the same effect).

Hack 7: Move after you eat

Walk for 10-20 minutes after you eat to curb the glucose spike.

Hack 8: If you have to have a snack, have a savoury one e.g.,

  • Lentil cake with humus and avocado
  • Oatcake or rye cracker with goats cheese
  • Pumpernickel rye sourdough toast with almond butter
