Are you exhausted and feel overwhelmed with life? Read about this brilliant book, ‘Adrenal Fatigue’!

Adrenal Fatigue bookIf you are exhausted and feel overwhelmed then ‘Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome’ by Dr James L. Wilson will be very helpful to you.

I have decided to write my latest blog on this book because about 80% of my clients suffer from Adrenal fatigue. This is a wonderful book written by a man who has specialised in adrenal function for over quarter of a century. The book is generally very easy to read and understandable. There is the odd chapter towards the end of the book on the physiology of adrenal fatigue that you may need to read more slowly and more than once to gain a full understanding.

So, what are your adrenal glands and what is adrenal fatigue?

Your adrenal glands sit on top of your kidney hence their name, ‘Ad-renal’s’. They are responsible for producing adrenaline, cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). These hormones help to buffer stress and adapt to everyday life demands.

When stressed, your adrenal glands will produce adrenaline to give you the boost of energy you need. Healthy adrenal glands will then increase their production of cortisol and DHEA in order to protect your health. If stress becomes long-term and chronic, your adrenals will eventually be unable to keep up with the demand. Firstly, DHEA begins to fall indicating adrenal fatigue. As your adrenals continue to produce adrenaline, you can feel anxious and nervous. People will often complain of insomnia, fatigue, depression, irritability, and digestive problems. When adrenaline is released during stress, your pancreas significantly reduces digestive enzymes production, and your blood sugar levels rise. As this becomes more chronic from prolonged stress, the results of high cortisol and high adrenaline include:

  • Lowered immunity = increase in infections
  • Low blood sugar = lack of energy at certain times during the day
  • Poor sleep = often the ability to fall asleep but waking between 3am and 4pm and struggling to get back to sleep
  • Increase lipid levels of blood fats = increase risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Water retention – loss of cellular potassium, a very important mineral
  • Lowered insulin sensitivity = higher risk of diabetes

Are you suffering from Adrenal fatigue

Those of you who are wondering may find it beneficial to answer the following questions:-

  1. Do you have lingering mild fatigue after exertion or stress?
  2. Do you find that you get tired and exhausted easily?
  3. Do you crave salty foods?
  4. Are you sensitive to minor changes in weather and surroundings?
  5. Are you dizzy when rising or standing up from a kneeling position?
  6. Do you have dark bluish or black circles under your eyes?
  7. Have you had bouts of nausea with or without vomiting?
  8. Do you catch colds or infections easily?
  9. Do your wounds heal slowly?
  10. Does your body or parts of your body feel tender, sore, sensitive to the touch, hot and/or painful?
  11. Do you feel puffy and swollen all over your body?
  12. Is your skin gradually tanning without exposure to sun or the ingestion of high levels of carotene-rich foods (e.g., daily carrot juice intake) or supplements?

If you answer yes to several of the above questions then you may be suffering from adrenal fatigue. If this is the case, you may find this book very beneficial for you. You may also like to come to see me for a one-to-one consultation.
