Leafy Green Vegetables and Diabetes

The prevalence of diabetes is currently estimated to be about 6.4% worldwide, and in the past two decades alone there has been a dramatic increase in the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Dietary factors are important and are potentially modifiable risk factors. There has been a focus on the role of carbohydrates and fibre, but the relationship between fruit and vegetable intake and incidence of type 2 diabetes is not fully understood. Researchers from the University of Leicester conducted a study that looked into the impact that dietary intake of fruit and vegetables had on type 2 diabetes. Their results, published in the British Medical Journal, indicated that people who consumed one and a half extra servings of green leafy vegetables a day reduced their chances of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as 14%. Time to eat your greens.
