Omega-6 and Heart

The results of a meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Nutrition revealed that diets high in omega-6 fatty acids could actually increase the risk of heart disease. This study also suggests that women are even more vulnerable to this dietary association. This is rather alarming news as many people have diligently replaced saturated fats (like butter) with omega-6 rich margarines and cooking oils due to advice that these fats are healthier for the heart. The study indicated that the best heart protection is from a mixed omega-3 and omega-6 diet. So the message to eat oily fish on a weekly basis remains a very important one.
